This Week’s Episode: Attention to Detail
When we walk into a hotel or a restaurant, a lot of the time, we don’t really pay much attention. We wait in line, then get shown to our seats, we sit down, we eat, we pay (no dine and dashes) and then we leave.
Then in conversation with friends you mention you went out for a meal to {insert fancy restaurant name here} and they remark, “love that place, the quirky pictures on the wall were funny” or “did you see the table lights made out of old Buckie bottles, how cool were they?” … wait what? No! Now you feel like you’ve been short changed by your own lack of attention.
Where are you going with this?
Good question, all in good time, there’s a point to this introductory rambling, I promise.
As Ferris Bueller once, famously, stated…
“Life Moves Pretty Fast. If You Don’t Stop And Look Around Once In A While, You Could Miss It.”
So, with that in mind, we come to weddings and a part which is important from a number of angles… detail.
Detail is what defines the character of the wedding, the couple’s vision and brings some beauty and content to the day. Detail is everywhere but often it gets overlooked or under appreciated. This is where it’s my job, as a wedding filmmaker, to capture those details and not just take them for granted.
From the couple’s point of view – this is where they have put thought, time and effort into a theme for the wedding, colour scheme, table planning and decorations, centre-pieces, favours etc.
From the room décor point of view – this can involve one or multiple suppliers to bring the vision together. The wedding planner, the florist, the stationary person, the room décor people, venue staff, the couple themselves, all of whom have contributed various parts to bring the wedding to life and by room this can be the ceremony room and if different, the reception room, depending on where you are getting married.
From the photo & film point of view – now that everything has been laid out perfectly, all that hard work and effort is complete, now you need to document it – remind those involved how amazing the room looked, how the caricature place cards were received, butterfly thongs in a wee treasure chest for the ladies and wisely named tables… oh and don’t forget… a cake made from 9 different cheeses…mmmm cheese!
All of this detail goes a long way to remind people of how amazing their day was as it passes so fast, many couples will tell you that, so it’s important for me to pay attention too.
